English Bay

Few places in Vancouver garner an equal level of appreciation from both locals and tourists. English Bay is without a doubt very high on this list. On any given day, strolling along the beach will treat you to a delightful mix of people walking their pets, jogging, performing, or just taking in the beautiful serene views. At dusk, visitors are greeted by some of the most breathtaking sunsets that nature has to offer. Adding to the appeal of the area are the charming West End coffee shops and one of the highest rated parks in the world, Stanley Park.

Whether in the winter or the summer, English Bay plays an integral role in some of the most popular events hosted in Vancouver. In no particular order, here are some of our favourites:

Honda Celebration of Light

As a summertime staple event, this is one of Vancouver’s largest and most well known festivals. The multiple-day event hosts over 1 million people in attendance. It’s a perfect way to end off a day down at English Bay. If you’re not keen on competing with others for primetime real estate down at the beach, we recommend you finding a friend that lives in the West End as many are treated to the fantastic fireworks from the comfort of their own apartments.

Lululemon Seawheeze Half Marathan

Known to sellout within minutes of opening up their registration website, this event is host to over 10,000 participants from all over the world. Whether you enjoy running or cheering others on, this event is one big party. The highlight for many is the portion of the run along Beach Avenue and through English Bay. The calm of the water undoubtedly helps distract one from the pounds of sweat that they are losing.

Vancouver Polar Bear Swim

As an annual tradition to kick off each year, thousands flock to English Bay on January 1st and take the plunge together into freezing cold water. This one may not be for everyone, but perhaps something to consider if you’re thinking about changing up your New Year’s Day.

Outside of hosting exciting world-class events, English Bay is rated as one of the best beaches in the world. Few can argue with this distinction as the charm and vibrancy of English Bay is very apparent whether you’re a first time visitor, or a long time Vancouver resident.
